DID YOU KNOW?

In order to produce 1 lb. of clothes - that is 1 pair of trousers - requires on average: 10,000 lb. of water, 0.5 lb. of fertilizers and 0.4 oz. of pesticides. Resulting in emissions of: 6 lb. of greenhouse gases!

According to a recent report on environmental benefits of clothing donations, each kg of clothes donated saves 4 kg of CO2!

This is another great reason to donate with Clothesline and keep our environment green and clean, while helping improve the lives of the more than 9 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes.

Did you know that each step of the clothing production process carries the potential for an environmental impact?

For example, conventionally grown cotton, one of the most popular clothing fibers, is also one of the most water- and pesticide-dependent crops. Only 2.4 percent of the world’s arable land is planted with cotton yet cotton accounts for 24 percent of the world’s insecticide market and 11 percent of the sale of global pesticides according to the World Wildlife Fund.

By donating to Clothesline, not only are you helping a great cause to fight diabetes, you are also helping to reduce our environmental footprint so that we can keep our world clean and sustainable.

The city of Ottawa has proposed a by-law that would require clothing donation operators to clearly identify whether or now they are a charity and requires the property owners to maintain the area around the boxes.

This is a great first step in combating rogue clothing donation operators who are collecting cloth donation for their personal gain.

Clothesline wishes everybody a happy St. Patrick's Day!!

Did you know that the actual color of St. Patrick is blue?

Green became associated with St. Patrick's Day during the 19th century. Green, in Irish legends, was worn by fairies and immortals, and also by people to encourage their crops to grow.

Have a safe and fun St. Patty's!

With Spring Cleaning around the corner, everyone can use some helpful tricks...here is one from Martha Stewart:

Carry All Apron-

Before you throw out that old kitchen apron, stash your essential spring-cleaning supplies in the pockets and use it as you go from room to room. It will leave your hands free to scrub and polish and you won't have to lug a heavy cleaning bucket around the house.

To create storage compartments, turn up the bottom 12 to 18 inches of a long apron. Determine pocket widths by using the size of your cleaning supplies as guides. Stitch vertically using a sewing machine

Remember, when you have sorted and cleaned your house, give Clothesline a call at 1-800-505-5525 to schedule a FREE pick up of clothing, small household and electronic items. You can also schedule your pick-up online at diabetes.ca/clothesline or find a Clothesline drop box nearest you to donate all cloth items and small electronics (in a separate bag).

100 per cent of net proceeds raised by Clothesline directly support the Canadian Diabetes Association and world leading diabetes research, education and programs. Thanks to your generosity, last year alone, Clothesline provided $10 million which supported research and programs like D-Camps which sends 1,500 children living with type 1 diabetes to camp to learn how to manage their disease and meet other kids like them.

If the thought of cleaning out of your closet gives you anxiety, how about some tips from Oprah and her organization guru, Adam Glassman.

Rule 1: If you haven't worn something for over two years, get rid of it. "Even if it's pricey," Adam says. "Give it to a friend who will make good use of it. Sell it, donate it, put it on eBay."

Rule 2: If it doesn't fit you anymore, get rid of it. "Hang it up on the door and call it closet art if you want that for inspiration," he says. "But truthfully, by the time someone gets back into a size, it may be out of style."

Rule 3: Don't fantasy dress. Oprah says she bought a lot of purses she thought would be perfect for a lady who lunches, but she never had time to go to lunch. If an item fits the lifestyle you want but not the lifestyle you live, get rid of it.

Rule 4: Everything in your closet should promote joy, beauty and usefulness. "You should feel pretty in it, and you should be comfortable in it," Adam says. "And it should be really practical."

Rule 5: If something brings up a bad memory or has a negative energy around it, purge it. You'll never want to wear something that reminds you of a bad time, but donate it and hope somebody else can enjoy it.

Rule 6: Get rid of duplicates. If you have a ton a of things that look the same, streamline.

Happy cleaning and remember to schedule your FREE pick-up with Clothesline by visiting diabetes.ca/clothesline where you can find all program information or simply call 1-800-505-5525.
